Picture collections are an undeniable asset for libraries. They are sometimes underused or not as visible as they should be, either to the public or to the hierarchical authority. Their enhancement and the development of cultural activities may contribute to making this cultural heritage more accessible. It raises several stakes, from the connection between original documents and their digital reproductions, to the involvement of the public, through their integration of this service offer into the activities of librarians and into the general policy of the institution. This study is an attempt at considering various initiatives in this field and at suggesting potential orientations, in questioning the special features of libraries when it comes to the promotion of visual heritage.
