Dieser Artikel skizziert die großen Züge des Programms « Gedächtnis der Menschheit », das von der Unesco ins Leben gerufen wurde, um das gefährdete dokumentarische Erbe zu bewahren, den Zugang hierzu zu verbessern, seinen Wert zu erkennen und die daraus entstandenen Ergebnisse zu verbreiten. Die für die Klassifizierung des dokumentarischen Erbes zugrundegelegten Kriterien und die Auswahl der Projekte werden aufgezählt und die technischen, rechtlichen und finanziellen Rahmenbedingungen erwähnt. Mehrere Projekte werden vorgestellt: die Handschriften der Nationalbibliothek in Prag, die Radziwill-Chronik aus Sankt Petersburg, die astronomischen Handschriften des Kandilli-Observatoriums in Istanbul, einige Handschriften der Nationalbibliothek in Kairo, 3 000 afrikanische Postkarten aus der Kolonialzeit, ein Projekt unter dem Titel « Das Gedächtnis Rußlands » usw.

This article broadly sketches out the main features of « The World's Memory », a programme launched by Unesco in order to preserve important heritage documents that are at risk around the world, to liberalize access to them, to raise awareness of their value and to distribute material derived from them. The criteria used for the registration of such documents and for the selection of specific projects are described and the technical, legal and financial scope is briefly outlined. Several projects are examined including those concerning the manuscripts of the National Library of Prague, the Radziwill Chronicle at St. Petersburg, the astronomy manuscripts from the Kandilli Observatory at Istanbul, some manuscripts held by the National Library of Cairo, 3,000 African postcards from the colonial period, a project entitled « The Memory of Russia », etc.

Cet article esquisse les grandes lignes de « Mémoire du monde », programme lancé par l'Unesco pour préserver le patrimoine documentaire en péril, en démocratiser l'accès, faire prendre conscience de sa valeur et diffuser les produits qui en sont dérivés. Les critères retenus pour l'inscription des patrimoines documentaires et la sélection des projets sont énumérés et les cadres technique, juridique et financier brièvement évoqués. Plusieurs projets sont présentés : les manuscrits de la Bibliothèque nationale de Prague, la Chronique Radziwill de Saint-Pétersbourg, des manuscrits astronomiques de l'Observatoire de Kandilli (Istanbul), quelques manuscrits de la Bibliothèque nationale du Caire, 3 000 cartes postales africaines de l'époque coloniale, un projet intitulé « Mémoire de la Russie », etc.
