In library architecture, the metaphor of light is often used in the battle against obscurantism. Symbolical, aesthetic, political, light in a library must, above all, be adapted to the needs, sometimes contradictory, of different users who are far from being equal in the face of light. In the last thirty years, the value of natural light economical and ecological, has been enhanced and can offer some interesting combinations with artificial light. On condition that light is thought through at the start of a project and that the discussions between the sponsor, the architect and the librarian are fruitful.
