Seit 2007 verfügt die British Library über ein durch einen für das Publikum zugänglichen Übergang mit dem Hauptgebäude verbundenes Zentrum für Bucherhaltung. Dieser Artikel, der die Entwicklung und die Realisierung des Projektes schildert, erklärt, inwiefern der Wille, gemeinsam die Aufgaben der Bucherhaltung, der Weiterbildung, der angewandten Recherche und der Öffnung für das Publikum (kostenlose Dauerausstellung und Lernbereich) zu erfüllen, viel zu seinem Erfolg beitragen, indem das beste traditionelle Now-how mit den neuen Restaurierungs- und Verwaltungstechniken vereint wird.

In 2007, the British Library opened a new conservation centre connected to the main library building by a public terrace. Helen Shenton looks back at the origin and progress of the project, attributing the new centre’s success to its dedication to conservation, training, applied research, and public access (in the form of a free permanent exhibition and education suite) as well as its combination of the finest traditional expertise with new techniques in restoration and administration.

Desde el 2007, la British Library dispone de un centro de conservación enlazado al edificio principal a través de una pasarela accecible al público. Este artículo, que retraza la génesis y la realización del proyecto, explica cómo la voluntad de asumir conjuntamente las misiones de conservación, de formación, de investigación aplicada y de apertura al público (exposición permanente gratuita y espacio educativo) asociando lo mejor del saber-hacer tradicional y de las nuevas técnicas de restauración y de administración (programa “de otra manera”) tienen mucho que ver en este éxito.

Depuis 2007, la British Library dispose d’un centre de conservation relié au bâtiment principal par une passerelle accessible au public. Cet article, qui retrace la genèse et la réalisation du projet, explique en quoi la volonté d’assumer conjointement les missions de conservation, de formation, de recherche appliquée et d’ouverture au public (exposition permanente gratuite et espace éducatif) en associant le meilleur du savoir-faire traditionnel et des nouvelles techniques de restauration et d’administration (programme « autrement ») sont pour beaucoup dans sa réussite.
