Bangladesh is one of the world’s most populous developing countries, with 142.3 million inhabitants. The first public libraries were opened by private interests in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The National Library, however, only dates back to 1971, following independence. Few libraries are currently in a position to offer innovative services, particularly in the field of ITC, although there is a crying need for such tools in a country where few people have access to computers and where around half the population is illiterate. It is to be hoped that access to such technologies will become much more widespread in the years to come.
