This article studies the education and training of university and research library directors in Europe. Though only 30% of European library heads have a PhD, most of them think that such a diploma is useful (but not vital) for running a library. Many of them have undergone training prior to becoming directors (either during their university studies or in the context of lifelong education) and the current training offer generally meets their most frequently expressed needs and demands. Only a small minority of European directors have studied or worked abroad, but professional and international mobility is likely to increase in the future.
