Automation in libraries has begun since the 1960’s. To get the best of new technology, libraries have caused specific systems to be developed : the ALS later to be known as ILS. These softwares were meant to deal with each and every activities within the library and to manage all collections. The technological progress together with the increase of documents and documents’ supports have induced libraries to add new tools to this original system. The ILS uses and structure have thus evolved to meet with the new needs of librarianship. While still widely in use, the ILS is bound to change wether by integrating new functionalities by becoming more easy to connect with other softwares. confronted with new technological choices, libraries will need to define precisely what they need and want to do to decide with efficiency and accuracy what system(s) to use.
