Before being a novelist, an essayist, or also a journalist, Albert Camus was a playwright. He creates original plays, adapts others, makes himself a stage director as well, and more generally participates in the 20th century French theatre. The following work tends to define the border lines of his theatrical esthetic as well as study the diffusion and the reception of his work, through his performances everywhere in France, from the liberation of Paris until his death on the 4th of January 1960. If it could have been considered as an abstruse theatre of idea where philosophy prevails over play, camusian theatre follows an ambitious project of renovation of the dramatic art where prevail search for modern tragic language, updating of myths and will to bring human beings together… Won’t it be possible then to understand Albert Camus’ theatre as a popular one ?
