Paavo Arvola

Paavo Arvola : Promote European cooperation in the information sciences

Could you introduce yourself ? / Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques lignes ?
I am Paavo Arvola a 42-year-old Finnish academic, who is currently working as senior lecturer in digital humanities at the new Tampere University. I received my PhD in Information studies and interactive media 2011. Since 2017, to my great delight, I have served as the chair of the Euclid, subsequently Bobcatsss Association board.
Euclid, The European Association for Library and Information Education & Research, was established in 1992. It is an independent European non-governmental and non-profit organisation. The purpose of the Association is to promote European cooperation within library and information science (LIS) education and research, and to provide a body through which European interest regarding LIS education can be represented.

A new governing board has been elected this year. Could you present us the new team in charge of Euclid?/Un nouveau conseil d’administration a été élu cette année.
The board in charge is: Paavo Arvola (Tampereen yliopisto, Finland), Joumana Boustany (Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, France), Carla Colombati (Università degli studi di Teramo, Italy), Jesús Gascón (Universitat de Barcelona, Spain), Jurgita Rudžionienė (Vilniaus universitetas, Vilnius, Lithuania), Tania Todorova Sofia, Bulgaria) and Sirje Virkus (Tallina ülikool, Tallinn, Estonia).
The Euclid Council meeting, i.e. the community, will elect or reelect the Euclid board annually during the Bobcatsss conference. This has been the policy since 2017. Before that, there was a fixed term of 3 years for the board, which was quite inflexible in practice, in the event a board member was discontinuing in the middle of the term.
The Euclid board has had representatives from different parts of the European continent. Personally, I find this appropriate, but it would be great to see active board members also from other continents in the future. We should tear down the walls instead of building them.

How to follow the Euclid's News?/ Comment pouvons-nous suivre les actualités d’Euclid?
We have a web page bobcatsss.info, which serves as an info channel and a façade to our resources. Anyone is welcome to follow our Twitter account (@BobcatsssAssoc1), which is supposed to offer up-to-date information. Facebook is perhaps a secondary channel, but still available. We also have a vast list of email addresses, which is in use, but might not be that up-to-date.
As a more traditional and a longer publication format, we publish a newsletter twice a year. It reports current issues and introduces the actors of our discipline. In addition, the board gives an annual report during every Council meeting.

I heard Euclid is thinking about changing its name? Could you explain us what are the challenges and purposes of a such change?/J’ai cru comprendre que vous envisagiez de changer de nom.
The acronym Euclid has long traditions and its expansion describes well our purpose. That said, it may still be a little outdated and ambiguous. Outdated, since it does not correspond to its initial components, and ambiguous, since there are many organizations with exactly the same name. In addition, it might be geologically too restrictive, while being perhaps too European centered.
Based on our inquiries Bobcatsss is a much stronger and better-known brand than Euclid.  Accordingly, the proposed new name for Euclid, Bobcatsss Association, establishes a closer liaison with the conference, which will remain our core forum. Yet, changing the name should and will not affect our goals to promote other cooperation within our discipline. The European perspective will remain central, but with the doors open to anyone.
In order not to lose our roots, traditions and goals while taking the name Bobcatsss Association, we add - whenever appropriate (web page, Twitter etc.) - our historical name as follows: Bobcatsss Association (A.K.A European Association for Library and Information Education & Research, EUCLID).

A.K.A European Association for Library and Information Education & Research, EUCLID)
